School and Community
George Phineas Butler Comprehensive High School, named after a distinguished former principal of Richmond Academy, was founded and established in August, 1960. Students themselves helped to choose the school colors of gold and white, the English bulldog as their mascot, and the name Candela for their yearbook. Each element chosen to pay homage to the 2 flagship universities: University of Georgia and Georgia Tech.
Butler High School is a four-year public comprehensive high school with an emphasis on college and career readiness. Butler offers Advance Placement Courses, Fine Arts, Marine JROTC, and CTAE electives to all students. Students who are selected for the AVID Program (Advancement Via Individual Determination) receive additional academic and social support that will help them rise to the challenges of Post-Secondary Education. Our teachers provide research-based curriculum and strategies to students each day that develop critical thinking skills in literacy and math.

An official class rank is compiled for each grade that is computed at the end of the year. Averages are carried out to three decimal places and final averages are not rounded. Student’s grade point average (GPA) is based on quality points. Regular high school courses are on a 4.0 scale and Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, and College/University courses are on a 5.0 scale awarded for each grade earned. High school student transcripts include the GPA, class rank, and numerical average.

College and Career Ready Performance Index (CCRPI) is Georgia’s statewide accountability system. The CCRPI assesses how well students are prepared for college and careers, and ensures that schools are focused on improving achievement among all students. The index measures student achievement on indicators such as content mastery, student growth on progress, subgroup performance on closing gaps, and various areas including Lexile performance, attendance, and other academic based measurements.
